From The Dickens' Village Series: Twelve Days of Dickens' Village

The 12 Days of Christmas originated in the 18th century as a memory game played on the 12th night, the last night between Christmas and Epiphany, and because of this custom, the song title emerged.  It was played with each player recalling and singing a list of items named by the preceding player and then adding another verse.
